The Travelling Pixie in Hong Kong
Panevino Cucina Italiana
Italian restaurant Panevino Cucina Italiana has become my family’s recent Sunday favourite! Ever since we moved to Jardine’s Lookout over in Hong Kong Island, we always went down to Tai Hang seeking for new restaurants. Every Sunday, my parents and I would think about what to have for our Sunday Family Lunch and we’ve been going to Panevino for these few Sundays! Sunday is supposed to be a rest-day, so what’s more appropriate than to go to a restaurant that offers this vacation atmosphere, right?
Right at the ‘mouth’ of the Causeway Bay entrance to Tai Hang, Panevino sits there as a secluded restaurant, juxtapositioned with the hustle of Hong Kong. With furniture made out of bamboo and fans on the ceiling, Panevino’s interior decor simply spells out v-a-c-a-t-i-o-n! It’s open ‘window’ area adds to the relaxing atmosphere as customers are invited to sit facing out the window during their meals and to enjoy the secluded area of peace and quiet.
Well, back to the menu!
Their lunch sets are really a great bargain I must say! The Pasta Set includes an all-you-can-eat salad bar plus a main-sized pasta of your choice for just the price of the pasta which is around HK$100 (about £10). If you don’t feel the crave for carbs, you could choose from a range of other main dishes to go with your salad! There’s a vast array of choices on the salad bar, but as usual, as the carb-lover, I went for the bread, I simply love the simple taste of bread with olive oil and occasionally with a tinge of sea salt and pepper!
After the refreshing helpings from the salad bar, the long-awaited pasta arrives! As usual, I ordered my all-time favourite, the Linguine Aglio e Olio – which is essentially linguine fried in garlic slices, herbs, chillis and drizzled with olive oil, a very simple pasta but very hard to master! But I must say, the aglio e olio here is absolutely superb! The linguine is cooked to al dente, and the balance between the garlic, herbs and chilli is impeccable! I’d say the aglio e olio wouldn’t be a good choice if you’re not a fan of spicy food, but I’d definitely recommend it if you’re looking for a savoury meal!
We always order a Pizza Margherita on the side along with our main courses to share (cuz we simply love it!) and we felt particularly greedy that day so we decided to order an extra calamari – which also tasted delicious!
Ooo! By the way, I saw on their promotional leaflet that they do a buy-one-get-one-free pasta promotion deal on Wednesdays! I haven’t been to Panevino‘s on weekdays before, but it seems like a good choice if you’re looking for a budget dinner out with friends!
