The Travelling Pixie in London
Hong Kong-ers simply love Japanese cuisine, there will always be at least one Japanese restaurant nearby in Hong Kong. But as students studying in London, we have much less choices in good, authentic Japanese restaurants.
Yet. There’s a superb Japanese restaurant near Piccadilly Circus station – So Restaurant. If you’re an international student from Hong Kong, you’ve probably already heard of it, or more so, you’re most likely to already have been there. So Restaurant is definitely NOT inexpensive, but its fabulously yummy!
The first time I’ve ever been was three years ago, and throughout the three years, I’ve been to So Restaurant quite a few times. This time, I brought my close friend and coursemate, Chloe, to try out her first ever So Restaurant meal.
So Restaurant’s signature dish is the Foie Gras Ju (pan-fried foie gras bento with shiitake mushrooms and sauce) and its Foie Gras Nigiri (pan-fried foie gras on sushi rice). As it’s Chloe’s first time, I suggested that we order a Special Sashimi Platter, one Foie Gras Ju, a Wagyu Beef Tataki, assorted tempura and one dessert which we will decide after all the main meal.
The first dish that arrived was the Special Sashimi Platter. The fresh sashimi looked as if it was gleaming in front of us. Salmon, salmon belly, scallops shrimp, tuna, yellow tail… they were all simply delicious! As we gladly gulped down the sashimi, the heavenly wagyu beef tataki was served. Served with an appetising sour sauce, the tender wagyu beef is presented as a cold dish. I would definitely recommend the wagyu beef tataki to more adventurous souls as the beef tataki is served rare, but I’d say the wagyu beef tataki is definitely a must-have apart from the foie gras ju.
Then came the anticipated Foie Gras Ju! This bento was absolutely delicious, the perfected pan-fried foie gras with shiitake mushroom slices and rice. As I took a bite, the the crispy coat of the foie gras peeled back and revealed a delicate texture of liver. We both greedily spooned the bento into our own dishes and gobbled it down. After 10 minutes, we were looking at an astonishingly clean empty box, and were both cheekily thinking – we should’ve ordered two foie gras jus instead.
Halfway through the meal, we decided to admit that we’re greedy and ordered an extra assorted tempura dish plus we decided that we’re going to get the tofu cheesecake with raspberry ice-cream.
Yes I KNOW! 5 dishes between two petite girls for dinner is probably TOO greedy, but we thought… we might as well order it if we are able to finish it. As long as we’re not wasting food, its okay right? – Yes. Its okay! (I’m on the verge of successfully hypnotising myself!)
This meal was absolutely wonderful and so aesthetically pleasing for my tastebuds – Yum factor: OFF THE SCALE! The total came to £98 altogether (which I admit, is pretty expensive!) But I think we’ve worked hard enough throughout the term to deserve treating ourselves a nice meal out! x
